March News and Events

Here at The HOW People, you’ll find us cheerleading amazing women everyday but as Monday 8th March is International Women’s Day we are dedicating this month’s blog to sharing with you how individuals, charities and projects are trying to change the future for the next generation of women.

WATCH

This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is #choosetochallenge and you can watch some brilliant creations by women from a variety of backgrounds speaking about how and why they choose to challenge gender bias and inequality. We love the engaging poem by Aminah Rahman and the video by JayaHadADream about her experiences as a woman with a passion for music!

Got a bit more time?  Watch the UN speech given by the truly inspirational Malala Yousafzai, the young girl who was shot by the Taliban for speaking out for girls’ right to education. She went on to become the youngest ever Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and is the most incredible advocate for fighting for what you believe in.

We think this is a great opportunity to be focusing on getting more girls interested in STEM subjects and breaking down the gender stereotypes related to these careers. These articles have some top tips about how you can encourage your child to get more involved in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths and encourage us to reframe how we discuss these subjects with them.

DO

We challenge you to #choosetochallenge.
Join women from around the world and find a way this month to challenge gender bias and inequality. This could be something as simple as thinking more carefully about the language you use or challenging someone else for this. For example, we might say without thinking, ‘You throw like a girl’. Is there really a difference in how boys and girls throw? Gender-stereotyped phrases like this have become a natural part of our speech and this is where we can start to make some simple yet important changes!

Or you could buy from the ‘boys’ section of a clothes shop - who says that they are just for boys!?

Let us know how you get on and what you do!
